The Arms

Last year over at my other blog, I wrote about my arms. Specifically, they have that lovely flap of wing that older women tend to get. Chris says I should just learn to live with it because it’s there because I’m old (he didn’t use the word, but he may as well have) and he doesn’t see the big deal.

Well, on Sunday at the pool, the woman in the lane next to mine was probably at least in her 60s and I watched as her arms came out of the water with each stroke. The lady was built! I don’t think I had that kind of muscle tone in my arms when I was 16!

Which means, of course, that my arms aren’t flabby to the point I could probably jump off the roof of a building and fly because I’m old. It’s because I’m lazy. At least when it comes to doing any kind of toning.

Obviously, I did not fully implement last October’s plan and I have made no progress in that area. So, Sunday afternoon, I did push ups … and a plank for 30 seconds, which is rock star status for me (the one on your elbows and forearms, not the one with straight arms) … and a few upward and downward-facing dogs in between. The dogs were more for stretching, since I do them plenty in yoga classes that I try to attend twice a week. We have a wonderful coworker who’s in yoga teacher training at a local studio who leads us for an hour twice a week at lunchtime, no pay necessary. We did get her a gift of thanks, though. She loves the practice and I love the price. Plus, she’s one of the best yoga instructors I ever had. And, no, she probably isn’t even reading this, so this is all absolutely true!

So, there ya go. I need to work harder on my arms. I need to lose the flab. I will be a happier person if I do. Maybe. Probably not. But at least I’ll like the mirror a bit more, especially in ballet class!

There was a point to this post. I kind of got away from it. It’s that I’m incredibly sore today. From 10 push ups and a 30-second plank.

  1. Hi Renee! I recently watched this YouTube “movie” and it has changed my thoughts on eating sugar. It’s long, but IMO worth watching. I have lost 1.5 pounds in three days by making small changes to the sugar I am eating.

Also, my friend Dave Smiley is out in LA making a movie/documentary on spiritual weight loss. It is almost completed and should be released in October. I will let you know when that is available to watch. He truly believes it will change women’s lives with regard to their weight.

    • I’ve lost weight fine eating a little sugar every day. It’s not something I’m willing to give up. 🙂

Plus, weight fluctuates by the hour, much less daily. I lost 2.5 pounds from Sunday to Monday and am back up 2 pounds this morning just because of the time of day, water retention, etc. I only count what I weigh on Saturday mornings as my actual weight and it’s how I guage whether I’ve gained, lost or stayed the same.

But thank you for the tip.

  3. You’ve inspired me. My arms are ok but they aren’t fabulous. I’m gonna be fabulous!

    • My arms probably aren’t as bad as I think, but I still want some tone! That woman in the pool blew me away. I covet her arms! And if she can have them and she had to be 20 or 30 years older than me, then I can have them, too!

  4. Just so you know, you look smokin’ in the picture where you weigh 144. I can’t imagine you weighing 115 pounds. Find me on myfitnesspal: firedrgn2000.

    • I’ll find you!

What you don’t see in that picture, because of the way I’m standing, is the arm flaps and the belly fat (among other things). Considering how much I work out, I think it’s just a matter of needing to lose the fat, which means dropping weight. I have incredible abs. I can feel them and I can do some major ab work without trouble, but they’re covered in flab. Ick! 🙂

But, really, it isn’t the number on the scale for me. 115 is something I picked out of the sky, but if I like the way I look at 125 or 120, then I’ll be happy with it.
